The name speaks to the DNA of this bike, and also its expanded capabilities. The first step we take before building your Z-Zero XD is gaining an understanding of exactly what you want from your bike. As important as this is for a road bike, it’s even more critical with the Z-Zero XD. Why? Well, think of this bike as a Swiss Army knife. It’s designed to do many things well, but based on your riding style and preferences, we can fine-tune the ride and dial in the performance features that matter most to you. Everything from the layup schedule of the carbon fiber to the tubing sizes and geometries are customizable for comfort and performance. When you factor in all the different tubing choices, there are essentially 16 effective sizes to give you the perfect fit. There’s no other carbon fiber frame in this category that can offer that level of comfort and performance. The Z-Zero XD also allows riders to choose details such as fork style (thru-axle or quick release), cable routing and ports. The rear brake hose is routed through the downtube and chainstay, allowing the rear disc brake caliper to be mounted inside the triangle. You'll also find that these traits are accentuated by the lightweight and extremely stiff FACT 11r carbon fiber construction, while course control is furthered through its one-by design, hydraulic disc brakes, and front/rear thru-axles. Altogether, it's a bike that's guaranteed to take your performance to new heights this season. Beginning with the frame, we implemented our Rider-First Engineered technology that was first introduced on our Tarmacs. Using size-specific tubes and layups, this technology allows the CruX to feature the same ride characteristics across every size in the range. Not only this, but it also allowed us to significantly drop the frame weight, so the CruX now comes in at a scant 900 grams for a 56cm—over 400 grams lighter than the previous frameset. A light and stiff frame, alone, isn't useful in a 'cross race if it isn't compliant, however, which is why the new CruX also combines stiffness and compliance in all the right places. And to assist with the latter, we lowered the seat collar by two centimeters for more exposed seatpost and, therefore, cushion for big hits. We also know that cyclocross races are often won in the corners and over the barriers, which is why the CruX geometry takes this into account. The top tube has been design for easy shouldering when you're hopping off to clear barriers, as it features a large opening to the front triangle and a flat bottom. For stability in the corners and on off-camber sections, the geometry has a low bottom bracket and a sharp front end. This combination also helps to initiate corners, regardless of the terrain. With maximum mud-shedding ability in mind, we included eight millimeters of clearance on all sides of a 33mm tire, providing plenty of clearance for muddy conditions. 'Cross is notorious for being hard on equipment. Mud, rain, snow, crashes— they all take their toll. That's why with the CruX Sport, Specialized took their FACT 11r carbon frameset and spec'd it with Shimano's reliable, yet affordable, 105 groupset. Beginning with the frame, they implemented their Rider-First Engineered frame technology into the new frame. Using size-specific tubes and layups, the CruX features the same ride characteristics across the size range. Not only this, but Rider First-Engineered technology also allowed us to significantly drop the frameset weight—coming in at a scant 900 grams for a 56cm—over 400 grams lighter than the previous frameset. A light, stiff frame though isn't useful in a cross race if it isn't compliant, which is why the CruX meshes stiffness and compliance in all the right places. They also lowered the seat collar by two centimeters, allowing for more exposed seatpost and therefore cushion from big hits. Cyclocross races are often won in the corners and over the barriers, and the CruX geometry takes this into account. When hopping off to clear the barriers, the easy-to-shoulder top tube, with a large opening to the front triangle and flat bottom, is smooth and comfortable. The CruX geometry also features a low bottom bracket, to help with stability in hard corners and off camber sections, as well as a sharp front end to help initiate corners regardless of the terrain. With maximum mud shedding ability in mind, the CruX has eight-millimeters of clearance on all sides of a 33mm tire, providing plenty of clearance in even the worst conditions. After all, it's great to have a light weight bike, but if it's covered in 10 pounds of mud, frame weight is irrelevant.
